Student Dress Code Policy

BACKGROUND

Stockdale Road Primary school has a compulsory school uniform that children are required to wear:

  • during school hours,

  • while travelling to and from school

  • when engaged in school activities off site

  • when engaged in school activities out of school hours

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Stockdale Road Primary School dress code is to:

  • promote a sense of identity and pride

  • allow all student to feel equal

  • prevent bullying and competition on the basis of clothing

  • ensure students’ appearance reflects the expectations of the school community

  • enhance the profile and identity of the school and its students within the wider community

  • enhance individual student safety and group security

  • ensure all students are dressed safely and appropriately for school activities

  • encourage students to develop pride in their appearance

  • prepare students for the expectations of workplaces

  • strengthen the spirit of community within the school

  • encourage students to present themselves appropriately for a particular role

ACCEPTABLE CLOTHING GUIDELINES FOR ALL SCHOOL ACTIVITIES:

  • Shoes need to be appropriate for school activities. Open toed shoes, sandals and thongs, etc are considered dangerous and therefore inappropriate. Sneakers are acceptable.

  • Jewellery is considered unnecessary and inappropriate. Only studs are considered an appropriate type of earring for school, due to safety considerations.

  • Hair – Students with long hair are strongly encouraged to wear it tied back and it must not be dyed an unnatural colour.

  • Students are not allowed to wear make-up and male students must be clean shaven.

  • The items selected to be worn as the commemorative Grade 6 uniform must include royal blue and gold, and a final decision as to what to purchase will be made by the school Principal.

  • Other than clear nail polish, cosmetics may not be worn at school.

  • The only hats that are acceptable are Sunsmart hats consistent with our Sunsmart policy. They must be worn outside in terms 1 & 4. Hats are not to be worn inside.

RESPONSIBILITY OF PARENTS AND CARERS:

  • to purchase the required items in accordance with the school dress code

  • to ensure that their child complies with the dress code of the school

  • to contact the school if their child is not in school uniform on any given occasion

  • to approach the Principal if exemption is required due to Human Rights or Anti-Discrimination requirements

RESPONSIBILITY OF STUDENTS:

  • to comply with the dress code of the school

RESPONSIBILITY OF TEACHERS:

  • to enforce the dress code of the school

  • to contact parents where there is a breach of the school’s dress code

RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOOL COUNCIL:

•be responsible for developing a written statement outlining the expectations regarding student appearance

This policy was last approved by school council October 2018 and is scheduled for review in October

2021.
